The Diversity and Cultural Affairs Council of The Department of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine was created in 2004 to further promote the Department’s commitment to excellence in clinical education, patient care, and research. Our goals are: - To provide a comprehensive array of initiatives designed to sensitize trainees and faculty members to multicultural issues and to promote the growth of a diverse training and practice environment.
- To support and promote the interests of students, residents, and faculty representing underrepresented, minority backgrounds.
- To create an environment of inclusion that welcomes and supports people of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
To address our mission, the Department of Medicine and the Diversity and Cultural Affairs Council have implemented several initiatives. Each year, a dedicated selection of Grand Rounds are organized with the goal of focusing on individual and organizational contributions to cultural competence in healthcare including barriers to care, international health, and healthcare disparities. Residents are supported and encouraged to participate in continuity clinics and other rotations that are designed to promote cultural competence both within Chicago and internationally. Strong mentoring relationships are established between the residents and faculty of the Department of Medicine and the minority medical student groups.
