Terrence Barrett, MD Associate Professor of Medicine Chief, Division of Gastroenterology tabarrett@northwestern.edu The Division of Gastroenterology is comprised of 15 full-time faculty members, 6-9 fellows, and more than 35 staff members. We provide consultative services at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center and run busy outpatient practices in the fields of gastroenterology and interventional endoscopy in the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation facility within Northwestern Memorial Hospital. These outpatient practices, directed by Dr Christian Stevoff, have in excess of 12,000 patient encounters per year.
Clinical services offered by the division are state-of-the-art covering the broad spectrum of the subspecialty. The endoscopy lab of Northwestern Memorial Hospital is directed by Dr Michael Jones and encompasses 10 procedure rooms and a physiology laboratory for esophageal, gastric, and intestinal motility studies. As the founder of that manometry laboratory, I have nurtured its development over the years and am proud of its current stature as one of the premier clinical and research facilities of its kind in the country. The interventional endoscopy service is widely recognized for expertise in ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography), endoscopic ultrasound, and palliative cancer treatments with endoluminal stents and is one of the busiest in the country. The clinical nutrition service, organized by Dr Alan Buchman, manages a large inpatient nutritional support service. Research activities within the division include investigations into the molecular biology of intestinal inflammation (Dr. Terrence Barrett), physiological investigations of motility disorders (Drs. Kahrilas, Hirano, Pandolfino, and Jones), chemoprevention of GI cancers (Dr Howden), pharmaceutical trials of new medications or new uses for existing medications (Drs. Howden and Buchman), testing of experimental devices (Drs. Kahrilas and Pandolfino). Indicative of the research enterprise within the division, the group has authored several publications and currently holds 3 RO1 awards from the NIH, and a multitude of industry or government supported contracts for pharmaceutical or device testing. I hope that this broad overview of the activities of the Division communicates its unique and dynamic posture. I believe that our division offers a rigorous and stimulating environment for postgraduate medical education in all facets of the subspecialty of gastroenterology. We welcome your consideration of Northwestern for your postgraduate clinical or research training in gastroenterology, hepatology, or endoscopy. |
