The practice of Geriatric Medicine encompasses care of frail elderly patients with multiple interacting medical and psychosocial problems. Faculty geriatricians, geriatric nurses and geriatric social workers at Northwestern work in partnership with primary care physicians to provide multidisciplinary evaluation and long term follow-up of elderly patients and families coping with chronic functionally disabling illnesses like dementia. Faculty and fellows in The Geriatrics Division offer outpatient evaluation (Northwestern Memorial Hospital Geriatric Evaluation Service and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center Geriatrics Clinic) and inpatient consultation (Northwestern Memorial Hospital) in addition to structured clinical and didactic educational experiences for medical students and house officers. Research conducted under the sponsorship of the Division ranges in scope from basic and clinical gerontology to health services research. Current projects focus on osteoporosis, falls and the role of cholesterol and oxidative stresses in the pathogenesis of age-related memory impairment and Alzheimer's Disease. Strong collaborative relationships exist with The Buehler Center on Aging, Health & Society and the Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (CNADC).
