This program prepares future academicians and meets the requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine for certification in geriatric medicine. The goal of this two- or three-year fellowship is to provide fellows with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to achieve excellence in both clinical geriatrics research and the teaching of geriatrics. The fellowship program offers clinical experiences covering the full spectrum of problems confronted in the elderly. Program sites include Northwestern Memorial Hospital, VA Chicago Healthcare System - Lakeside Division, and several nursing homes. Rotations at these sites include in- and outpatient geriatric evaluation services, acute inpatient services, skilled nursing unit, home care, hospice, rehabilitation, and long-term care. Formal didactic programs encompass clinical geriatrics, biostatistics, research design, teaching, epidemiology, ethics, and health policy. The faculty of the Division of Geriatrics comprises experienced geriatricians with research backgrounds in clinical medicine, nutrition, epidemiology, pharmacology, and molecular biology. Division members also are associated with formal educational programs of other Medical School and University departments. Formal collaborative relationships exist between the division and the Departments of Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology—Immunology, Preventive Medicine, and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, as well as the Divisions of General Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, and Cardiology in the Department of Medicine.
