Mentoring

Overview/Purpose

  • Required for tenure-track, highly recommended for all junior, full-time faculty
  • To assist in training for career in academic medicine
  • Introduction to Northwestern policies, procedures, culture
  • Annually review progress of professional growth and development
  • Review committee (mentor, advisor, division chief/assignee) created at time of appointment
  • Assist in creating annual professional development plan
  • Mentoring and Annual Reviews last until tenure decision or departure
Description of Review Committee
  • Composed of mentor, advisor, and Division Chief (or designee)
  • Meets annually to review junior faculty growth and development
  • Members provide junior faculty with insight, support, and guidance throughout the year

Description of Mentor

  • Associate or full professor, tenured if for tenure-track
  • In same career track, if possible
  • Similar or complementary research (or clinical) focus
  • Appointed by division chief, in consultation with mentee and Department Chair
  • Relevance of interests and good personality fit are most important attributes
  • Mentoring activities are included in Incentive Compensation

Description of Advisor (Secondary Mentor)

  • Provides additional expertise and support beyond that supplied by mentor and Division Chief
  • May be outside division or DOM
  • More senior than mentee, but need not be Associate or Full Professor

Responsibilities of Mentee

  • Meet with potential mentors to assess “fit” of interests and personality
  • Meet with division chief to finalize selection of mentor and advisor
  • Create annual professional development plan
  • Meet regularly with mentor, and as needed with advisor and division chief/asignee
  • Ask for support and guidance; don’t try to “go it alone”
  • Provide annual review of mentor

Responsibilities of Mentor

  • Meet regularly with mentee (at least quarterly, at first) to create and monitor annual professional development plan
  • Assure annual meeting of review committee with mentee to review progress and annual professional development plan
  • Provide written report of annual meeting to Division Chief and Department Chair
  • Provide insight, guidance, and support to mentee Responsibilities of Advisor
  • Meet as needed with mentee
  • Attend annual meeting of review committee
  • Provide insight, guidance, and support to mentee

Responsibilities of Division Chief or Designee (e.g Associate Chief for Research)

  • Meet with mentee to jointly select mentor
  • Meet as needed with mentee to evaluate mentor/mentee relationship; work with mentor and mentee if difficulties arise; change mentors when necessary
  • Attend annual meeting of review committee
  • Provide insight, guidance, and support to mentee
  • Support and encourage senior faculty to act as mentors
