The Department of Medicine’s Residency Program strongly encourages each resident to participate in research projects under the supervision of a faculty mentor. Each spring the department sponsors the Annual Resident Research Symposium, a poster abstract presentation of current research projects. A panel of senior faculty members judges the abstracts for scientific merit and clarity. The winners are awarded a trip to the scientific meeting of their choice.
The 14th Annual Resident Research Symposium was held last April. More than 30 abstracts were presented; many will also be presented at national meetings or published in leading journals. The majority of residents who participate in research activities have the opportunity to travel to regional and national meetings to present their work.
This year’s panel of judges included:
- Dr. Molly Carr, Endocrinology
- Dr. Navdeep Chandel, Pulmonary/Critical Care
- Dr. Elizabeth Eklund, Hematology/Oncology
- Dr. Nalini Rajamannan, Cardiology
The award winner for clinical research was PGY3 resident Michael Quadrini, MD.
The basic science award went to PGY2 resident Sherene Fakhran, MD.
