Diane B. Wayne, MD, has received the Society of General Internal Medicine (www.sgim.org) National Award for Scholarship in Medical Education. Dr. Wayne is the Director of the Department of Medicine’s Residency Training Program. The award was presented at the SGIM’s 30th Annual Meeting held this last April in Toronto, Canada. It recognizes Dr. Wayne’s national leadership and innovation in medical education as well as her research group’s record of publication in this area. Dr. Wayne has successfully implemented the use of sophisticated medical simulators into residency education. Use of medical simulation provides residents with realistic hands-on training in a variety of scenarios. For example, residents can practice Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Protocols on a mannequin that displays cardiac and breath sounds, pulses and realistic responses to medications used in ACLS algorithms. Says Dr. Wayne, “Medical simulation allows us to focus the educational experience entirely on the needs of learners. The goals of our training program and our research has always been to produce superior clinicians who provide high quality patient care. I am grateful to our residents and everyone who has participated in these programs for their dedication to patient care and education.” |
