Chairman's Letter

Welcome to the homepage of the Northwestern University Department of Medicine!

Internal medicine is the largest and broadest specialty in medicine. The many facets of the Department of Medicine at Northwestern reflect this breadth. About 150 of the department's faculty members are general internists, who provide comprehensive primary and preventive care. Others serve as consultants in subspecialty areas of internal medicine or conduct research programs in their particular areas of expertise.

Faculty research interests are diverse and include investigation from the molecular and genetic level (such as the molecular basis of PLZF action in hematopoiesis and acute promyelocytic leukemia) to the population level (such as health literacy and communication). The department is well known for research in acute lung injury, polycystic ovary syndrome and reproductive endocrinology, peripheral vascular disease, collagen vascular diseases, the development of diagnostic techniques in nuclear cardiology, and hematologic malignancies. Many research efforts are conducted in collaboration with other departments or one of the University's interdisciplinary centers.

We welcome you to browse the pages of our website and hope that you will gain a deeper understanding of our commitment to excellence in all the arenas of medicine: education, patient care, and research. We welcome your comments and hope you enjoy your virtual visit.

Sincerely,

William L. Lowe Jr. MD
