The Feinberg School of Medicine

Many of the faculty members at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine have achieved national and international prominence in their fields. Well represented in numerous medical and scientific societies, they hold a variety of leadership positions and have garnered recognition for their contributions and accomplishments.

Feinberg School faculty members are actively involved in one or more of the school's missions: teaching, conducting research, and providing professional services. Those who see patients typically are members of the attending staffs of the five hospitals of the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University (Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, VA Chicago Health Care System—Lakeside Division, Children's Memorial Hospital, and Evanston Northwestern Healthcare). Full-time faculty members also provide patient care through the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, a multispecialty group practice of more than 400 physicians.

During the 1999–2000 academic year, the Feinberg School faculty totaled approximately 2,684 in 19 clinical and 4 basic science departments. About 76, all tenure-track faculty members, are in the basic science departments of Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology—Immunology, Molecular Pharmacology and Biological Chemistry, and Physiology. Approximately 2,605 faculty members are in the clinical departments, which include anesthesiology, dermatology, family medicine, medicine, neurological surgery, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology—head and neck surgery, pathology, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, physical therapy and human movement sciences, preventive medicine, psychiatry and behavioral sciences, radiology, surgery, and urology. More than 1,000 are full-time faculty members (243 in the tenure track), 146 are part time, and 1,405 are contributed service (volunteer) faculty members. One hundred and thirty-two faculty members are on the non-tenure track research line.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Northwestern University is affiliated with several acclaimed medical institutions. Our primary affiliation is with Northwestern Memorial Hospital. On May 1, 1999, Northwestern Memorial opened a new, 2-million square foot hospital. The medical center includes the 17-story Feinberg Inpatient Pavilion and the 22-story Galter Outpatient Pavilion, which share an eight-floor base containing public areas and diagnostic and therapeutic services.

The Feinberg Inpatient Pavilion houses 492 inpatient private rooms, including 92 private intensive care rooms. The rooms were designed with a family orientation and feature specially designed window seats that convert into pullout beds, views from every room (including the intensive care units), and tasteful artwork demonstrated to promote the healing process. Just as the hospital provides separate areas for patients and families and for staff, the patient rooms are "zoned," with chairs, bookshelves and a window on one side of the bed, and space for medical staff and equipment on the other side.

The Galter Pavilion houses clinical and office space for up to 600 Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation and private physicians. It provides patients with easy access to outpatient services and physicians' offices, while eliminating the need for costly duplication of services.

The new facility houses a major conference center, including an auditorium, banquet hall and high-tech learning laboratories, enabling NMH to lead and host important national conferences. In addition, a comprehensive Health Learning Center was developed for patients, visitors and the community. The center provides access to a wide range of health resources, including books, databases and Internet access. The design of the new hospital also includes a museum that exhibits the history of medicine and of Northwestern Memorial.

The new Northwestern Memorial Hospital has rapidly risen to the status of a model facility for healthcare providers in the United States and around the world.

Evanston Hospital

Evanston Hospital is located in the north suburbs of Chicago. With a history dating to 1891, the hospital today is a 420-bed hospital that is the nucleus of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare (formerly Evanston Hospital Corporation). Areas of clinical strength include cancer and cardiac services as well as maternity services including high-risk obstetrics. The hospital is a licensed Level I Trauma Center. In 2000, Evanston Northwestern Healthcare was once again named among the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation, the only Chicago-area institution to make the list for seven consecutive years.

The Veterans Affairs Chicago Health Care System

The Veterans Affairs Chicago Health Care System was created in 1996 with the integration of VA Lakeside Medical Center and VA West Side Medical Center. The VA Chicago Health Care System (VACHCS) provides care to over 51,000 veterans who reside in the City of Chicago and Cook County, Illinois, and in six counties in northwestern Indiana. The hospitals employ 2100 staff, including 186 physicians and 560 nurses. Over 800 individuals volunteer at the facilities.

Northwestern University is affiliated primarily with the Lakeside hospital and outpatient facility on the north side of Chicago. Secondary and tertiary inpatient and outpatient care is provided at the two VACHCS Medical Centers that are located six miles apart in downtown Chicago. There are a total of 337 operating beds at the two facilities. Specialized programs include AIDS, allergy, ambulatory surgery, angiography, audiology, cardiac catheterization, compensation and pension examinations, coronary care, day hospital, dental, dermatology, diabetes prevention and management, foot screening, gastroenterology, geriatric evaluation, hemodialysis, home care, hospice, intensive psychiatric community care program, magnetic resonance imaging, medical and surgical intensive care, memory disorders clinic, nuclear medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, ophthalmology, peripheral vascular studies, physical medicine and rehabilitation, podiatry, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, psychiatry, pulmonary function, radiation therapy, supportive housing program for homeless veterans, substance abuse, women's health, and the regional Vision Impairment Center to Optimize Remaining Sight (VICTORS) program.

Children's Memorial Hospital

Children's Memorial Hospital is our affiliated pediatrics institution. It is a full-service medical facility that treats children of all ages, and it has both a breadth and depth of services. Children's Memorial physicians, nurses, and other health care workers are all experienced in the care of children and are some of the most respected professionals in their fields. All of the hospital's approximately 250 in-house physicians and many of those based in the community are faculty members at Feinberg School of Medicine.

More than 236,000 outpatient visits are made to Children's Memorial each year, nearly 12,000 surgeries are performed and admissions total almost 13,000. The only freestanding pediatric hospital in Chicago, Children's Memorial is the area's leading health care provider for kids. However, families from many foreign countries also seek the expertise of professionals at Children's Memorial.
