On May 1, 1999, Northwestern Memorial opened a new, 2-million square foot hospital. The medical center includes the 17-story Feinberg Inpatient Pavilion and the 22-story Galter Outpatient Pavilion, which share an eight-floor base containing public areas and diagnostic and therapeutic services. Located in the prosperous 'Streeterville' neighborhood, Northwestern Memorial maintains an incredibly diverse patient population and remains a leader in indigent health care in the Chicagoland area. The Feinberg Inpatient Pavilion houses 492 inpatient private rooms, including 92 private intensive care rooms. The rooms were designed with a family orientation and feature specially designed window seats that convert into pullout beds, views from every room (including the intensive care units), and tasteful artwork demonstrated to promote the healing process. Just as the hospital provides separate areas for patients and families and for staff, the patient rooms are "zoned," with chairs, bookshelves and a window on one side of the bed, and space for medical staff and equipment on the other side. The modern facility houses a major conference center, including an auditorium, banquet hall and high-tech learning laboratories, enabling NMH to lead and host important national conferences. In addition, a comprehensive Health Learning Center was developed for patients, visitors and the community. This state of the art hospital also contains individual, computer equiped call rooms for residents and dedicated conference rooms for inpatient ward teams. Computer access is widely available throughout the hospital, including patient rooms and with mobile computer units with WiFi access. Northwestern University and the Veterans Administration Hospitals share one of the oldest relationships between a university and a VA in the nation. The West Side VA has a recently expanded 100 bed inpatient unit and 7 bed medical intensive care unit. The VA hospitals offer a unique and important experience for our residents in ambulatory care at the Lakeside VA and inpatient and emergency care at the West Side VA. The privilege and experience caring for our veterans remains robust at these hospitals and is cherished by faculty and residents alike.
