Deciding to put Northwestern #1 on my residency rank list is easily the best decision I’ve ever made. I made my rank list based on (a) the training I wanted to get, (b) the people I wanted to work with, and (c) the city I wanted to live in. After three years here, my experience has exceeded everything I could have hoped for. I worked with and learned from inspirational yet approachable attending physicians. I felt supported in a resident-friendly, responsive and dynamic environment fostered by Dr. Jameson and Dr. Wayne. I took care of and learned from a wonderful mix of patients from all walks of life. I had dedicated time to pursue a research project with an international expert in pulmonary disease.  Most importantly, I worked alongside simply amazing colleagues who have motivated me to become a better doctor and better person, and among whom I have found lifelong friends. All of this in an amazing city like Chicago…I couldn’t have dreamed of a better experience. As a chief medical resident, my current role includes not only leading discussions at morning report and organizing educational conferences, but also participating in quality improvement and medical informatics initiatives. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about our program!

When I first moved to Chicago to start college at Northwestern, I never imagined I’d still be here 10 years later.  But at every step of the way, I found myself continually choosing to stay because the educational and training environment fostered here is second to none.  We practice in a very busy tertiary care medical center, and the tremendous volume of patients provides housestaff with ample exposure to a spectrum of diseases from the bread and butter to the very rare.  As interns and residents, we’re exposed to national and world experts in every field as well as to opportunities to participate in research endeavors in preparation for fellowship training.  In addition, our interaction with the general medicine faculty both in our housestaff continuity clinics as well as on the inpatient services also prepares residents well for careers in academic general internal medicine.  Northwestern’s collegial learning environment is one of its strongest attributes.  Our attending physicians and consultants are approachable and genuinely enjoy teaching. Learning takes place in a uniquely challenging yet comfortable environment.  But arguably the best part of my residency was the residents I trained with.  I couldn’t have asked for more dedicated, hard-working, intelligent people to spend residency with.  They made learning at morning report enjoyable and every day challenged me to be a better physician and a better human being than I would have been able to achieve on my own.  I’ve never once regretted my decision to train at Northwestern, and I look forward to continuing on as a fellow.

There were a number of important qualities I looked for in a residency program, and I'm proud to say that Northwestern has exceeded all of my expectations in the following ways.  I wanted an academic environment that was challenging, yet supportive.  We work very hard at Northwestern, but the program leadership has also spent incredible amounts of time ensuring that that there is support at every level of training.  Secondly, I wanted a place where graduates went on to match successfully into fellowships.  As you'll see on interview day, we have consistently placed our graduates into the top fellowship programs, regionally as well as nationally.  Next, I wanted an academic environment where I would be clinically well heeled, yet also have the opportunity to explore research.  Between dedicated research months early in our training and literally hundreds of possible research mentors, many residents are able to publish in peer reviewed journals during their residency.  Finally and most importantly, I wanted a program where my peers taught, challenged, and inspired me.  I am proud to say that the residents at Northwestern are arguably the best in the country.  They are incredibly determined, social, intelligent, people who chose to come to Northwestern because of all it has to offer.  I know that when you visit you will feel this way too.

My decision to train at Northwestern became easy when I was able to clarify my 3 most important goals (1) to become a fantastic physician (both caring and capable), (2) to further my training in fellowship, and (3) to enjoy my three years as a resident as I'll never (hopefully) be able to do it again.  With those 3 ideals in mind, Northwestern easily became my first choice.  Supported by great faculty and mentors, our residents model remarkable dedication to providing the highest level of patient care while demonstrating a sincere commitment to academic medicine through teaching and research.  Not only do we care for a very diverse patient population, our housestaff and faculty come with incredibly diverse interests and backgrounds.  In the span of one afternoon, I found myself talking with one master clinician about his recent work in Ecuador (now he's learning Swahili for his trip to a clinic in Kenya) to meeting with my research mentor, a national leader in electrophysiology.  Great work, great people, in the beautiful backdrop called Chicago... I have not once regretted my decision.  Now as a Chief Medical Resident, I hope to give a little something back.
