Heart Failure

Resident Objectives for the Heart Failure Rotation

  1. Review the differential diagnosis of causes of systolic and diastolic heart failure. 
  1. Describe a systematic work up for these causes.
  1. List the appropriate indications for oral medications including ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, digoxin, spironolactone and oral diuretics. 
  1. Define when to uptitrate ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers.
  1. Manage the volume overloaded patient.
  1. Describe the indications for hemodynamic monitoring, inotropic therapy, intraortic balloon pumps, and short-term assist devices.
  1. Identify appropriate candidates for long-term assist devices and heart transplantation.
  1. Review the basics of post-operative cardiac management.
  1. Describe mechanisms and side effects of immunosuppressive agents as well as their clinical applications.
